Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is afraid of him becoming the presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) because he is the only one who can beat former President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 presidential election.
The NDC is tacitly giving credence to this assertion as Dr. Bawumia is the only one among the over 10 presidential aspirants of the NPP who has been receiving vile attacks from the main opposition party in a desperate attempt to create disaffection towards the Vice President.
Dr. Bawumia told NPP delegates that he remains the party’s best bet to retain the party in office after the 2024 elections.
He is highly optimistic that he will beat the NDC flagbearer John Mahama in the next general election when the NPP elects him as presidential candidate.
Speaking to NPP delegates in the Tema West constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP must elect a candidate who can break the 8-year election cycle jinx.
The Vice President reiterated that he is the candidate former president John Mahama and the NDC fear the most in the upcoming 2024 presidential polls.
“They know we will break the 8, and they know that John Mahama cannot take me on in the North, and they know that I will beat him in the North and this is why they don’t want me to be the flagbearer.”
Vice President Bawumia on Friday, June 16, 2023 submitted his presidential nomination form, paving the way for him to contest in the NPP flagbearership race.
He was the toast of both young and old at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down as party faithful received him with admirable ecstasy.
The popularity and charisma of Dr. Bawumia within the rank and file of the NPP came to the fore as he appeared at that the party head office, a spectacle political watchers believe, clearly sends a strong signal about his popularity and the favourite in the upcoming NPP flagbearership contest.
Dr. Bawumia has so far visited about 20 constituencies in the Greater Accra Region and the delegates are enthusiastically declaring him as the obvious choice to succeed President Nana Akufo- Addo.
THE CUSTODIAN has gathered that the Vice President has been receiving red-carpet treatment from the delegates who are promising to him a landslide victory in the November 4, 2023 presidential primary.
The engagement provides an opportunity for delegates to personally interact with Dr. Bawumia and understand his motivations for seeking the leadership position within the NPP.
Through these interactions, he aims to establish direct communication with party members and share his vision for leading the NPP in the upcoming 2024 elections.
The governing party will organise a special electoral college on August 26, 2023 to bring the number of presidential aspirants to five for the main primary.
