The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority caucus in Parliament has slammed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus for failing to attend Friday’s Parliamentary proceedings in significant numbers, resulting in lack of quorum for business.
The minority group expressed serious concerns about the absence of the NDC Members of Parliament (MPs) as the required minimum of 92 lawmakers was not earlier met for parliamentary business on March 7, 2025, prompting First Deputy Speaker, Mr Bernard Ahiafor to suspend the House.
Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps after the suspension, the NPP MP for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko expressed the frustration of the minority caucus about the conduct of the majority NDC MPs, which has been a recurrent phenomenon since President John Dramani Mahama started making his ministerial nominations.
“We need one-third of the House to commence business. We come to the House to work. Ghanaians voted for us to come to the House to conduct business,” Prof. Nyarko stated.
He criticised the majority caucus, “The NDC claims to be the super majority, but they struggle to get their members to come to the House to do business.”
Prof. Nyarko added, “Today, what we have seen is just embarrassing. For us, this is worrying. How long can we continue to do this? We want Ghanaians to know and to tell our friends from the NDC to take the business of the House seriously because Ghanaians expect a lot from us. They want us to meet their needs and aspirations.”
This is not the first time the Minority caucus has criticised the Majority for their absenteeism.
The Minority Leader, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin had previously challenged the NDC, questioning their commitment to legislative duties.
The Minority caucus has consistently emphasised the importance of maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of parliamentary work.
