The New Patriotic Party (NPP) yesterday announced a national peaceful demonstration for Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Accra, saying the protest is aimed at defending Ghana’s constitutional democracy, judicial independence and the rule of law.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters, the NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, said the exercise, themed “Democracy Under Attack,” was a constitutional response to what the party described as politically motivated persecution, selective justice and threats to democratic institutions.
Planned route
The demonstration is expected to begin at 5:00 a.m. at the Community Centre opposite the Supreme Court of Ghana. From there, participants will march through the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Road, pass the Efua Sutherland/Ridge Roundabout and the Arko Adjei Interchange, before ending at the main entrance of Jubilee House.
The party said three petitions would be presented during the protest: one to the Chief Justice at the Supreme Court, one to the President at Jubilee House and a third to the Speaker of Parliament.
Party’s concerns
The NPP said it was acting out of concern over what it sees as a pattern of selective application of justice, disregard for due process and actions that could undermine the independence of key state institutions.
It argued that the demonstration was not intended to create disorder but to make a constitutional appeal to officeholders to uphold fairness, accountability, impartiality and institutional independence.
Security appeal
The party said the Ghana Police Service had been notified in line with the Public Order Act and expressed confidence that the police would provide adequate security for participants, the public and property.
It also distanced itself from violence, vandalism or any attempt to disrupt the march, warning that anyone who engaged in criminal conduct should be dealt with according to law.
Mobilisation call
The NPP invited civil society organisations, organised labour, religious bodies, professional groups, students, the diplomatic community and other well-meaning Ghanaians to join the protest.
It also asked party aspirants, campaign teams and supporters in the Greater Accra Region to suspend campaign activities and support the mobilisation effort, with participants advised to wear black and red.
Next phase
According to the party, the Accra demonstration will be followed by another phase of the national engagement in Kumasi, with further details to be announced later.
The party said the protest is part of a sustained constitutional campaign to defend democratic governance and the institutions that support it.
