National executives of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its Members of Parliament (MPs) are in a crunch meeting with government over the call for the dismissal of two ministers at the Ministry of Finance.
Some NPP MPs have called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sack the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta and Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu-Boahen forthwith.
In what is seen as an internal revolt within the governing party, the concerned MPs at a news conference at the Parliament House today 25th October, 2022, served strong notice that they would boycott all government businesses in Parliament including the 2023 budget presentation and debate should the President fail to heed to their call.
“We want to serve notice that until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office, we members of the Majority Caucus here in Parliament will not participate in any business of government by or for the president by any other minister”, they stressed, indicating that the two ministers cannot manage the economy to take the country out its current hardships including the high cost of living and galloping depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
In a move to find an amical solution to the problem, NPP National Chairman, Mr. Stephen Ntim in a statement said the party, the MPs and government are engaging.
“The National Executive body of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken notice of a press conference held on Tuesday October 25, 2022, by some members of the Majority Caucus of Parliament, demanding amongst others, the immediate resignation or dismissal of Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta, Minster for Finance; and Hon. Charles Adu Boahen, Minister of State at the Highlight Finance Ministry respectively.
“In view of the above development, the leadership of the party is currently engaging Government as well as the Parliamentary Group, and urges all stakeholders to remain calm as it seeks an amicable resolution to the impasse.
“The leadership of the Party, herein. reiterates its commitment to at all times, engage Government on issues of utmost interest and concern to the Party, Government, and the citizenry.
“May God bless our homeland Ghana and make the New Patriotic Party great and strong”, the statement concluded.
