The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred disputes in over 30 constituencies to the Electoral Affairs Committee of the main opposition party for consideration and report.
Majority of the disputes, according to information gathered, are in Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central and Volta, necessitated suspension of the party’s constituency elections in those affected areas.
The Electoral Affairs Committee chaired by former Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem South and former Minister of State, Mr O. B. Amoah, has up to 24th July, 2026 to submit its report.
The disputed constituencies include three constituencies whose executive elections have been annulled following alleged breaches of party regulations, electoral guidelines, and court directives.
The party’s National Steering Committee announced the decision after reviewing the elections conducted nationwide over the weekend.
In a statement jointly signed by Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey and General Secretary Justice Kodua Frimpong and issued on July 15, 2026, the NPP said the affected elections were not conducted in line with the rules governing the party’s 2026 Constituency Executive Elections.
The constituencies affected by the decision are Bantama, Afigya Sekyere East, and Adansi Asokwa, all located in the Ashanti Region.
According to the party, the elections in these areas were held despite clear violations of established party procedures and, in some cases, existing court orders.
The National Steering Committee described the conduct of the elections as a disregard for party directives and the regulations guiding the internal electoral process. As a result, the committee resolved that the results from the three constituencies would not be recognised.
The party explained that the decision was necessary to protect the credibility of its internal democracy and ensure that all constituency elections are conducted according to approved procedures.
As part of efforts to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disputed elections, the National Steering Committee has summoned the Ashanti Regional Steering Committee to appear before it on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
The regional committee is expected to provide explanations regarding the events that led to the conduct of the elections in the affected constituencies despite the alleged violations.
The NPP also announced that issues relating to the Asante Akyem Central constituency, along with other unresolved disputes arising from the constituency elections, have been referred to the Electoral Affairs Committee of the National Council.
Electoral Affairs Committee’s task
The Electoral Affairs Committee has been tasked with reviewing the matters and providing recommendations to guide the party’s next steps.
The referral forms part of the party’s internal dispute resolution process, which is aimed at ensuring that disagreements arising from the elections are addressed fairly and transparently.
The party noted that resolving electoral disputes through the appropriate structures is essential to maintaining unity among members and preventing conflicts that could affect the party’s organisational strength ahead of future political activities.
The NPP further stressed that all constituency election processes must comply with its constitution, regulations, and approved guidelines.
It said the measures taken were not intended to undermine the participation of party members but rather to uphold the standards required for credible internal elections.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and respect for judicial processes, stating that no election conducted in breach of party rules or court orders would be accepted.
The development comes as the NPP continues efforts to reorganise its grassroots structures through the election of constituency executives across the country.
Constituency executives play a critical role in the party’s operations, including mobilisation of supporters, coordination of party activities, and preparation for future elections.
With the annulment of the disputed elections and the referral of outstanding matters to the appropriate committees, the party is expected to take further decisions after receiving recommendations from its internal bodies.
The NPP maintained that its actions were guided by the need to strengthen transparency, fairness, and accountability within its electoral system. It added that ensuring compliance with party rules remains a key priority in safeguarding the integrity of its internal democratic processes.
