The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to make public its official position on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, following an internal review of recommendations contained in the Constitution Review Committee’s report and the government’s subsequent response to those proposals.
The party announced on Friday, August 28, 2026, that its Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee had completed its assessment of the two key documents and prepared a position paper outlining the NPP’s views on the proposed constitutional changes.
According to a statement signed by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP, Chairman of the NPP Policy Co-ordination Committee, the party was formally consulted during the national constitutional review process and submitted its views to the Constitution Review Committee (CRC).
The Committee subsequently presented its report to the government, setting the stage for the government to respond to the recommendations.
The government’s response was subsequently captured in a Position Paper dated Thursday, July 30, 2026, setting out its position on the various recommendations made by the Constitution Review Committee.
The document has now become a major reference point for political parties and other stakeholders as discussions over possible amendments to the 1992 Constitution move into another phase.
The NPP said its decision to undertake an independent assessment of both documents aligned with its commitment to inclusive, consultative decision-making.
Rather than immediately announcing a position, the party tasked its Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee with conducting a detailed examination of the CRC report alongside the government’s Position Paper.
Following that review, the committee has completed the NPP’s own position paper. However, the party stressed that the document does not yet constitute its final official position. It must first pass through the party’s internal approval structures.
The next stage will see the NPP’s position paper submitted to its 2028 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration.
The two bodies are expected to scrutinise the proposals and the recommendations contained in the party’s paper before the NPP formally adopts its position.
Only after that internal process is complete will the party communicate its official position on the proposed constitutional amendments to the Ghanaian public.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of a broader national conversation about the future of the constitutional and governance framework.
The review process has involved consultations with political parties, state institutions, professional groups, civil society organisations, traditional authorities, religious bodies and other stakeholders, to identify areas of the 1992 Constitution that may require amendment.
The NPP’s involvement in the process is particularly significant because of its position as one of the two dominant political parties and its extensive experience in government.
The party has previously participated in constitutional and governance debates, including discussions surrounding the balance of power among the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary, decentralisation, independent constitutional bodies, public accountability and the financing of political institutions.
Dr. Bawumia’s involvement at the party’s approval stage could also give the eventual position added political significance.
