The Member of Parliament for Savelugu constituency who is doubles as the Deputy Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Gender, Hon. Fatahiya Abdul Aziz has urged the government not to shield the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Abdulai Zakaria, for his alleged sexual misconduct.
She argues that the protection of children must never be compromised for political considerations.
”No political affiliation or connection to the ruling government should shield anyone from investigation or accountability.
”The protection of our children must never be compromised by political considerations” she stated.
The Savelugu MP in a Facebook post noted that the schools must be safe environment where young people learn, grow and prepare for the future.
She stated the allegations against the headmaster are particularly disturbing because they involve a person entrusted with the welfare and guidance of students.
”These cases underscore the need to move beyond reactive suspensions and assurances. Allegations of criminal conduct must be referred to the appropriate authorities, while school officials who fail to act on complaints must be held accountable where negligence is established” she admonished.
According to the New Patriotic Party lawmaker, the concerns extend beyond Obuasi, revealing reports from Bole Senior High School in June 2026 and Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School in August 2026 have also raised serious questions about student safety and institutional responses to alleged sexual misconduct.
Hajia Fatahiya has therefore implored the government to conduct thorough, impartial investigations and prosecute anyone found culpable.
”The government must demonstrate its commitment to child protection through decisive action and not words alone.”
She also wants the relevant government institutions to investigate the handling of earlier complaints and sanction officials found to have neglected their responsibilities.
Additionally, she said the victims and their families must be provided the appropriate psychological and social support and improve reporting mechanisms and school protection policies to ensure complaints are addressed promptly.
Meanwhile, the embattled headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria was arrested and granted a self recognisance bail.
