Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo

The defeated Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has congratulated the newly elected national executives for their victories at the recent delegates congress of the main opposition party.

“I wish to congratulate the National Chairman, Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and all National Executive Officers of our party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who were elected in the just-ended National Delegates Congress held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, 17th December, 2022”, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo said in a congratulatory statement issued on Monday.

The former national chairman however registered his displeasure about the manner in which the campaign leading to the congress was conducted.

A few days before the election, a leaked tape captured Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, then General Secretary, detailing to some party delegates in Kumasi, during his campaign tours, how certain decisions taken by Mr Ofosu-Ampofo as chairman, led to the defeat of the party in the 2020 general election.

This, according to political analysts, largely contributed to the defeat of the incumbent national chairman.

In the statement, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo said, “While I still hold the view that our various campaigns could have been more decent and issue-based, it has become even more pertinent for us to deploy all our energies to fast-track the healing and peace-building process in order to engender the unity needed for a collective prosecution of our agenda for victory 2024”.

He added, “Let us appreciate that this process is simply a prelude to the battle ahead of us. I pray that all losers will quickly recover from our individual pain and soldier on. Unity remains paramount to our success now and beyond.

“I re-dedicate myself to the bigger task of working for victory 2024 and pledge my unalloyed commitment to work even harder for the party together with the elected national officers, and the rank and file of our great party to achieve our ultimate goal of regaining power from the NPP in 2024.

“I take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to all colleagues who worked with me in my four-year tenure as National Chairman. I further extend gratitude to all supporters, well-wishers, delegates and my hard-working campaign team for their support and sacrifices.

May God bless the great National Democratic Congress and bless our homeland Ghana”.

Mr Nketiah polled 5,569 votes while Mr Ofosu-Ampofo polled 2,892 votes at the polls.

The other two candidates, Nii Armah Ashittey and Samuel Yaw Adusei polled 38 and 52 votes, respectively.
