Over one hundred teachers left the Gushegu municipality in the Northern Region last year due to lack of accommodation and adequate teaching and learning facilities, the Member of Parliament, Mr. Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, has disclosed.
This situation may further worsen in the coming period if there is no timely intervention from the government, as several educational facilities were badly hit by a severe rainstorm last Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
The Custodian has gathered that more than six schools and about 200 houses were destroyed, displacing dozens of families, and many pupils were forced out of school.
The situation has undermined effective teaching and learning, with lessons in some of the schools presently being held under trees after the school buildings had their roofs ripped off.
Some of the hardest-hit basic schools include Gaa Kindergarten and Primary, Limo Primary, Digbila Primary, Zinindo Primary, Gushegu Senior High School, and the Gushegu Nursing and Midwifery Training College.
Following the incident, the New Patriotic Party lawmaker visited the affected places to assess the various structural destruction caused across these institutions.

The former Deputy Minister for Transport, in a media interaction, noted that the situation will undermine effective teaching and learning in the area.
The lawmaker noted the prevailing issue may compel more teachers to request transfers out of the municipality, something he bemoaned will further impact teaching and learning outcomes.
He observed a worrying teacher-to-student ratio in the municipality, stating that there are some school which have only one teacher responsible for six classrooms.
”…The senior high school is here, and behind us, you can see the remnants of the storm. This is the administration block, and that’s the headmaster (standing right beside me). It’s completely gone; if you go to the back of the building, it’s been blown to this side, so the other side of the building is completely ripped off.
”Now, they need to be in school to guide the students, and that’s where they also store school materials and hold meetings to give proper care and guidance to the students,” he stated.

The legislator further called on the Ministry of Education and the government, development partners and philanthropists to intervene to mitigate the situation before schools reopen.
The Headmaster for Gushegu Senior High School, Salifu Imoro Somed, said the administration is completely ripped off with a power cut to the facility.
He stated that administrative work is now being conducted under trees until the place is fixed.
