The Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Timothy Yoosa Bonga

The Northern Region Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested three suspected kidnappers believed to be part of a kidnapping and highway robbery syndicate operating in the northern part of the country.

The personnel of the police CID raided the hotel facilities where the suspects were lodging separately upon receiving intelligence on May 13, 2021.

The Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Timothy Yoosa Bonga who confirmed the arrest to Journalists in Tamale at a news conference said the suspects arrived in the northern regional capital and were believed to be preparing to move to Salaga, Makango, Bimbila and Wulensi areas to attack and kidnap people for ransom.   

The police have identified the suspects as, Yussif Mohammed, 22, a Fulani herdsman from Koforidua in the Eastern region, Sanda Mohammed Umar, 23, another Fulani herdsman from Bunjai in the East Gonja municipality of the Savannah region and Sanda Mohammed, 23, also a Fulani herdsman from Kintampo.

DCOP Yoosa disclosed police recovered a machete, mobile phone and an amount of GHS1, 500 from Mohammed Umar, 3 mobile phones, cash of GHS1, 800 from Yussif Mohammed and an additional amount of GHS5,239 on his mobile wallet and Sanda Mohammed also had in his possession 3 mobile phones and cash of GHS2, 561.

However, Mr. Yoosa indicated the suspects have failed to give account of how these monies were obtained, adding they have also adamant to lead police into their place of abode for further investigations.

“Our investigators also retrieved videos and scenes of suspects displaying bundles of 50 Ghana cedis notes being splashed by them in what appeared to be goodies collected from robbery scenes or otherwise of ransoms received from kidnappers”

He therefore assured the police administration is working assiduously to identify the robbery or kidnapping victims and further appealed to the general public to volunteer relevant information to assist police investigation.
