The intervention became necessary after members of the beneficiary communities appealed to the MP for support. Lack of infrastructure and accommodation remains a major bottleneck undermining access to quality teaching and learning in these hard to reach farming communities.
The pupils lose contact hours due to the traveling distance of teachers from the municipal capital, Savelugu, on a daily basis. However, the situation is expected to improve as the lawmaker has handed the facility to the Savelugu Municipal Education Directorate.
The Savelugu Municipal Education Director, Mr. Mohammed Abdul Majeed, in an exclusive interview said teachers posted to distant schools are always reluctant to go leading to poor teaching and learning outcomes.
“Teaching and learning in most of these rural communities are not going well as expected. So, because of this, we have always been crying and praying to people particularly those who are resourceful to come to our aid and get accommodation for our teachers” he stated.
The Director believe once accommodation is available for them [teachers], they will stay in the communities from Monday to Friday, emphasizing no teacher can complaint of lack of accommodation. stressing they will now be comfortable to stay and focus to teacher the pupils effectively.
Consequently, Mr. Abdul Majeed has commended the Savelugu legislator for stepping in to mitigate the situation.
Meanwhile, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz, for her part highlighted the significance of infrastructure in promoting effective teaching and learning. She maintained that teachers’ accommodation is essentially critical especially in deprived communities.
The New Patriotic Party lawmaker noted the facility will alleviate the suffering of teachers who hitherto travel long distances to the community to teach.
“Imagine the distance to this place and by the time a teacher will travel from Savelugu or Tamale to this place, it will be late for them to teach. This also affects the progress of the children because they lose precious contact hours” she stated.
