Firefighters are battling a major blaze that has engulfed a row of shops directly opposite the Accra Central Police Station, destroying property worth tens of thousands of cedis.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that personnel from the Accra City Fire Station were among the first responders deployed to the scene. To strengthen efforts to contain the fire, three additional fire tenders from the Ministries, Parliament and Industrial Area Fire Stations have been dispatched.
One firefighter sustained injuries while battling the flames, although details about the extent of the injury have not yet been disclosed.
The fire, which broke out in buildings housing several shops, prompted a swift emergency response as crews worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures, including the Accra Central Police Station.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, and no fatalities have been reported so far. The full extent of the damage remains unknown as firefighters continue efforts to bring the situation under control.
Emergency personnel remain at the scene, with the GNFS deploying significant resources to contain the blaze and minimise further destruction.
The public has been advised to avoid the affected area to allow emergency crews to operate without obstruction. Investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to begin once firefighting operations have been completed.
The GNFS has assured the public that every effort is being made to extinguish the fire and safeguard lives and property.
