Ghana has once again been thrown into a state of mourning weeks after we lost 8 government officials in a tragic Helicopter crash–which grief we are yet to fully recover.
The icy hand of death has descended upon Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, once again reminding us of life’s frailty. Reports say, the ubiquitous former First Lady died this afternoon at Ridge Hospital in Accra where she was receiving treatment after taking ill.
Since news of her demise became public, particularly on social media, there’s been outpouring of tributes, albeit real and fake from the political spectrum and the ordinary public.
Combing the blue app, I have observed that some notable high profile members of the ruling NDC government have either refused or are reluctant in eulogizing Mrs Rawlings for reasons which your guess would be as good as mine.
Could it be that their guilty conscience is haunting them on how they conspired and battered the image of the former First Lady; subjecting her to public ridicule and opprobrium when she decided to contest the late Prof. Mills in the infamous 2012 NDC presidential primaries?
The vile propaganda that was waged against no mean the wife of the Founder of NDC (Jerry Rawlings), the very party they’re enjoying from today cannot be overemphasized. That poignant reminder of ‘GAME v FONKAR’ “war” is ever yet to be witnessed again in any political grouping. Deadly, it was!
By the end of the skewed elections in favor of Prof Mills, the once powerful First Lady had been reduced to a persona non-grata by the very people she together with her husband brought into limelight. She became an outcast in the very NDC, a party, which flag she personally designed its logo, and lays patent rights.
As if that was not enough, her husband (Jerry Rawlings of blessed memory) was described by then General Secretary Asiedu Nketiah as a ‘barking dog who had been chained’ in the heat of the atrocious campaign to elect a Flagbearer for the 2012 elections.
Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings is still paying for the “sins” of his parents in the current government, such that she’s been ignored in Ministerial appointments in the current regime.
Mind you, she’s not novice either politically or professionally; for Christ’s sake, Zanetor is a 3-time Member of Parliament and a qualified physician of several years experience. Tell me why such a weighty person would be sidestepped, and Akandoh handed the Health Ministry, if not for vindictive politics.
The end of an era: The Rawlingses have gone with their “Probity and accountability”. If the NDC won’t eulogize you, some of us will tell the story to the young ones.
Former First Lady, Designer of NDC party logo, Founder of 31st December Women’s Movement and Founder of NDP, rest in peace.
Assalamualaikum.
