The Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon Sule Salifu, has sanctioned that, going forward, all advertisement which are to be mounted on any billboard in the northern regional capital should be sent to the assembly for vetting before being mounted on the billboard.

The Mayor stated in a letter copied to THE CUSTODIAN on Friday (June 17, 2022) that the assembly’s bye-laws will be evoked to deal with person(s) who will flout the above directive.

Hon Sule registered the displeasure of the city authorities over the recent advertisement on a giant billboard with inscriptions, tolerance, love and acceptance purportedly promoting members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“Following recent public outburst in the metropolis over an advertisement displayed on a billboard in the Mohiyebihi Electoral area, we wish to state our displeasure at the turn of events.

“Going forward, all advertisement, which are to be mounted on any billboard in the metropolis, should be sent to the Assembly for vetting before being mounted on the billboard. Respectively, failure to do so as indicated above, the Assembly’s bye-laws will evoked” the Mayor emphasized.

Investigation

Accordingly, the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has also initiated investigations to unearth the individual(s) who sanctioned for the advertisement to be displayed on the billboard.

THE CUSTODIAN has gathered that the Metro Assembly has invited the advertising agency in charge of the billboard to assist in the ongoing investigations.    

Background

Some youth at Moheyebihi in the Tamale metropolis on Tuesday allegedly pulled down a purported LGBTQI+ billboard mounted at Banjira Junction, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern region.

The youth purportedly pulled down the billboard and burnt it into ashes some few hours after it was mounted.

The purported LGBTQI+ billboard had the inscriptions Love, Tolerance and Acceptance are proper Ghanaian family values.

Some of the youth wondered how and when the billboard was mounted and threatened to resist any attempt to impose the LGBTQI+ activities on the people of the North.
