Spain booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals after edging Belgium 2-1 in a thrilling quarter-final, with substitute Mikel Merino once again proving to be La Roja’s match-winner.
Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated possession from the opening whistle and deservedly took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabian Ruiz. The midfielder reacted quickest after Dani Olmo’s effort was parried, calmly slotting home to reward Spain’s attacking intent.
Belgium, however, refused to be overrun. Despite spending long periods without the ball, the Red Devils capitalised on one of their few clear opportunities before the break. Charles De Ketelaere rose highest to power home a superb header in the 41st minute, restoring parity and silencing the Spanish supporters.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Spain controlling possession and creating the better chances while Belgium remained disciplined in defence and looked dangerous on the counterattack. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced several important saves before suffering an injury that forced him off, leaving Belgium to rely on substitute Senne Lammens for the closing stages.
As the match appeared destined for extra time, Spain’s relentless pressure finally paid off. In the 88th minute, Pau Cubarsí’s long-range effort slipped through the grasp of Lammens, allowing the alert Merino to pounce on the loose ball and fire home the decisive winner from close range. It was the midfielder’s second consecutive knockout-stage winning goal after his late strike against Portugal in the Round of 16.
Belgium threw players forward in search of a dramatic equaliser during stoppage time, but Spain’s defence stood firm to preserve their slender advantage and secure a place among the tournament’s final four.
The victory underlined Spain’s patience and attacking philosophy, as sustained pressure eventually broke down a resilient Belgian side that had battled admirably throughout the contest. Belgium’s spirited World Cup campaign comes to an end, while Spain continues their quest for a second world title.
La Roja will now face France in a mouth-watering semi-final showdown, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake.
