Zoomlion Ghana Limited has responded to media reports suggesting that its contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) was terminated by the government, stating instead that the agreement concluded naturally at the end of its term.
In a statement issued following a June 11, 2025, letter from the Office of the President, the waste management company explained that the contract under the Street Sweeping Programme officially expired in September 2024. This came after a six-month extension from its original end date of March 2024.
“The contract has therefore reached its natural conclusion and expired,” Zoomlion clarified. “Contrary to claims in some media reports, this expiration does not constitute a termination or cancellation of the agreement by the government, and that is not what the Office of the President stated.”
The letter from the Presidency, issued in response to a petition filed by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, confirmed the decision not to renew the contract. It further indicated that future sanitation service contracts would be awarded through competitive bidding.
In addition, the government plans to audit all payments made to Zoomlion after the contract expired, while also looking to improve the working conditions and remuneration of sanitation personnel.
Zoomlion expressed support for these measures, saying, “Zoomlion Ghana Limited fully supports and welcomes this approach.”
The company noted that the expired contract was itself the result of a competitive procurement process held in 2019. Zoomlion said it is ready to participate in the upcoming bidding opportunities.
“We are well prepared and eager to actively participate in any forthcoming competitive procurement processes.”
Addressing the audit of post-expiration payments, Zoomlion emphasized its commitment to ethical business practices.
“As a responsible corporate entity, transparency, integrity, and delivering value for money are core to our operations,” the company stated.
Zoomlion also backed the government’s efforts to uplift sanitation workers.
“Zoomlion remains deeply committed to ensuring dignified and sustainable livelihoods for sanitation workers across the country.”
The company made it clear that the letter from the Presidency pertains only to the expired contract and does not affect any of its other engagements with YEA or other government bodies.
Finally, Zoomlion highlighted growing international interest in its operations, citing expanding partnerships and assessments across the continent.
“Our success and impact in Ghana’s sanitation sector have attracted significant interest from 24 other African nations,” the company noted, referencing ongoing agreements and feasibility studies abroad.
