Mayor of Tamale, Hon Sule Salifu, has announced plans to construct a police station at the University for Development Studies (UDS) Tamale campus and Wamale as part of measures taken for law enforcement and crime combat in the metropolis.

According to Mr. Sule, this initiative is a collaboration between the Metro Assembly and some private sector institutions in order to clampdown on the increasing rate of indiscipline, lawlessness and pockets of chieftaincy disturbances in the area.

The Tamale Chief Executive disclosed this during an interaction with a cross-section of Journalists in the northern region to formally thank the media for their continuous support to the assembly especially before, during and after his appointment and subsequent endorsement by the assembly members.

He also seized the platform to strengthen ties between the assembly and the media as his administration has begun to implement series of activities to conduct government business in the metropolis.

The Mayor noted the TaMA is liaising with some financial institutions especially Banks to put up these additional police stations in the area.

“We’ve been engaging authorities of the University for Development Studies and they have agreed with us to put up a district police station around the campus; they want to do it opposite the campus, but the land earmarked belongs to a private individual and I have asked the assemblyman for the area to identify the owner so that we can have a discussion with him and when the land is release the UDS police station project will begin.”

He added the assembly has also raised some funds through DPAT (District Performance Assessment Tool), a grant facility to construct another station for the police administration between Wamale and Sanzirigu along the Tamale – Yendi highway to provide security residents in the Tamale South Sub-Metro.

However, he indicated the Metropolitan Assembly will liaise with the police hierarchy to acquire their designs and specifications before engineers can now start to work on these projects.

Tamale City Project

The Tamale MCE further highlighted on some measures taken to decongest the central business area of the capital. He said the city authorities will soon relocate the intra city buses doted across the city to the Kukuo market particularly those traveling to the eastern corridor of the region.

In addition, he noted the assembly is also holding discussions with the forestry commission to acquire land around the forest reserve near the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium to relocate all vehicles traveling to other neighboring regions in the north.

In effect, when this is done, the Mayor believes will automatically force tricycle operators in the metropolis to disperse to remain in business allowing space in the business area.

He added the assembly will embark on an exercise to evacuate all traders occupying spaces along the major streets around the main STC terminal and other areas such the ADB Bank, Bank of Ghana and other jurisdictions categorize as security zones in the metropolis.

This will enable the Tamale beautification project to takeoff as the assembly plans to plant sharp stones to beautify some of these locations.
