Some aggrieved youth of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) yesterday besieged the Northern Regional Office of the party and vandalised properties amidst gunshots.

The angry mob fired ammunition indiscriminately in the air as a form of protest to the appointment of Mr. Ali Adolf as the acting Regional Chairman.

The Functional Executive Committee of the NDC endorsed the former Saboba District Chief Executive by a majority decision after the committee failed to reach consensus at its meeting held last Tuesday, August 18.

This followed the sudden demise of the Regional Chairman, Naa Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila.

According to a statement issued by the Regional Secretary, Mr. Adolf was expected to superintend over the affairs of the largest opposition party in the region until the NDC goes to polls to elect new regional executives.

However, one of the Vice Chairmen, Alhaji Rufai Vellim opposed the nomination and argued the committee lacked the powers to make such an appointment.

Aside from the Vice Chairman, THE CUSTODIAN has learnt that the Deputy Regional Communication Officer, Hardi Pag’zaa, also opposed the decision and called for a stay of the process until the funeral rites of the late Chairman were performed.

Meanwhile, personnel of Tamale Police Headquarters were swiftly deployed to maintain law and order in the northern regional capital.
However, no arrest has been made at press time.

This is not the first time irate youth of the NDC attacked the party regional secretariat to vandalize party properties and locked up the place.
