The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is going to the polls today Saturday (29th April, 2023) to elect its Savelugu Constituency Executives to man the affairs of the party. The constituency is the last to hold its elections out of the 18 constituencies in the northern region.

The NPP National Council which is the second highest decision-making body of the party suspended the conduct of the Savelugu polls to pursue the parliamentary elections petition filed at the Tamale High Court by the party’s 2020 Parliamentary Candidate, Muhamed Abdul Samed Gunu, who was then the incumbent MP for the area.

43 prospective candidates picked nominations and filed to contest the various positions from the Chairman to Nasara Coordinator.

The voters comprising of polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, council of elders and council of patrons are expected to elect ten executives in today’s polls.

The incumbent Chairman is facing competition from four others. Other keenly contested positions include the Youth Organizer position, 8, Secretary position, 6, Organizer 5, Treasurer 4, First Vice Chair position 3, Second Vice Chair 3, Assistant Secretary 3, Women Organizer 3 and Nasara Coordinator 3.

However, the remaining seven executives which include some deputy executive positions, Communication Director and the Director of Research and Elections will be appointed after the polls.

Meanwhile, the NPP Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, who is Chairman of the elections committee in exclusive interview assured the elections will be transparent, free and fair.

He maintained the committee will not condone anything untoward that will affect the chances of the NPP in the 2024 general elections, adding the NPP is determined win back the seat.  

“I am here together with the other members of the committee to make sure the Savelugu elections is free and fair” he emphasized.
