The Gigha Medical Village (GMV) has commissioned an ultramodern well-equipped hospital at Kakpagyili a suburb of the Tamale metropolis to enhance access to healthcare in the Northern Region.
The hospital will provide general medicine (OPD and in – patient care), maternal and child health, surgeries – general and gynecology, radiology, laboratory, specialist consultations, pharmacy among others.
The Chief Executive Officer of Gigha Medical Village, Dr Sonlaar Joseph Kuutailmah said the mission of the facility is to provide patient-centered healthcare with excellence in quality, service with integrity and equitable access.
He disclosed the hospital has been digitized with a robust electronic health record system to make patient health and information management easy and fast with high efficiency and effectiveness.
Dr Sonlaar indicated the Gigha Medical Village is a subsidiary of Gigha Medical Village Foundation, a charity and humanitarian organization aimed at reaching out to the unreached in the areas of health, education and putting smiles on the faces of the underprivileged.
The CEO further called on management of the National Health Insurance Authority to approve its accreditation to enable people have a full benefit of the service.
“Gigha means ‘Give Ghana’ and it is a name that was muted by a group of Holland young ladies and gentleman – Anouk, Annelies and John Geert, through partnership with the Evangelical Church of Ghana. This Gigha group in Holland was so enthusiastic in health infrastructure that among other things they went into partnership with the church to provide a hundred percent sponsorship for me as a medical student in UDS – then a fee paying student in my fourth year” he explained.
The Mayor of Tamale, Mr. Sule Salifu, in his remarks stated the project is in line with the Government Policy on Public Private Partnership for Quality and Affordable Health Service delivery to the rural and urban communities and reiterated the commitment of the Akufo Addo government on Quality and Affordable health delivery for the people of Ghana and Northern Region is no exception.
The Tamale Mayor added the development aspirations especially on health service delivery, are consistent and perfectly aligned with the realization of the seventeen (17) United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
“I would also like to bring to the attention of the general public on government effort to extend health delivery to the people of Tugu Yepala and its environs in the Tamale Metropolitan area for the AGENDA 111 facility” he revealed.
The Northern Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr Braimah Abubakari, for his part underscored the importance of health infrastructure in healthcare delivery.
He noted the mandate of the Ghana Health Service is to make quality healthcare accessible to all in the country irrespective of financial status.
Dr Braimah observed the health facilities in the northern region woefully inadequate to meet demand of the population in the region.
“In northern region, our demarcation based on our electoral areas is over 4,700 but guess how many health facilities to serve this population, we have less than 800; when you drill down to Tamale metro, we have 63 CHPS zones and we have just 12 CHPS compounds to serve the entire population of Tamale” he pointed out.
