The eight nomadic herdsmen who were killed at Zakoli last Wednesday by unknown assailants in the Yendi municipality of the northern region have been laid to rest in Tamale. The burial ceremony was done on Sunday (April 17, 2022) in accordance with the Islamic tradition.
The deceased persons have been identified as follows: Alhaji Baako, Mallam Osman, Saibu Wubi, and three siblings who were also killed – Umar Jallo, 30, Kadir Jallo, 24, and Yahaya Jallo, 27. The identity of the last person according to police was yet to be known.
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, assured the affected families last week that plans were being put in place to give the deceased persons a befitting burial.
He indicated this would reduce the heighten tension in the community whilst the security continue to investigate the matter to apprehend the perpetrators. .
“I’m appealing to the Fulani community who has been at the end of the suffering to exercise restraint. The law will grind slowly but it will catch up with all the perpetrators” he assured.
He noted the atrocities caused will not go unpunished and accordingly implored the disgruntled community members to provide information for the arrest of the attackers.
Mr. Shani addressed the Fulani community people when he visited the area on Thursday, 14th April, 2022, to obtain first-hand information about the disturbance.
Bawumia Support Victims
His Excellency the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has presented a cash amount of GHS60,000 to families of the victims when he visited the community empathize with the bereaved families on Sunday, April 17, 2022.
An amount of GHS5,000 was presented for the funeral of each deceased person summing up to GHS40,000 as well as GHS20,000 to the four injured persons receiving treatment at the Yendi hospital.
The Vice President assured the people government would make available relief items to support them in this difficulty times whilst police lookout for the perpetrators.
