As part of efforts to provide decent accommodation for security personnel in the country, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will tomorrow, present 320-unit housing to the Ghana Police Service.
The presentation of the houses will take place at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra.
The new housing units will provide additional much-needed accommodation for police personnel to enhance their welfare and also enable them to perform their duties more effectively.
The 320-unit housing project, which began in 2018, comprises seven blocks of two-bedroom apartments and 13 blocks of three-bedroom apartments, with each block containing 16 apartments.
In addition to the residential units, the project features a multipurpose sports facility, a kindergarten school, and other auxiliary residential facilities.
In a statement issued on Friday, July 19, 2024 and signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Works and Housing, Elvis Adjei-Baah, the Ministry highlighted the significance of the project. “The completion and utilization of this housing project will augment the government’s other housing programmes that are being rolled out to increase the residential stock of public service workers,” the statement indicated.
It said the project represents a substantial effort by government to enhance the living conditions of public service workers and to address the housing deficit in the country.
The Ministry further emphasized that this initiative is a critical step towards reducing accommodation challenges in Ghana’s urban areas.
“This project will reduce accommodation challenges in our sprawling cities and ultimately bridge the national housing deficit, which stands at 1.8 million housing units,” the statement noted.
The inauguration ceremony will be attended by high-ranking government officials, members of the Ghana Police Service, and other stakeholders in the housing sector.
It is anticipated to be a milestone event, highlighting government’s commitment to addressing the housing needs of its citizens.
More accommodation for Police
In April 2023, President Akufo-Addo inaugurated 312 housing units for the Ghana Police Service at Kwabenya near, Accra.
The ultra-modern facility was the first phase of 514-unit housing project at the Kwabenya barracks.
The housing project paved the way for the redevelopment of the 80 acres of land around the Kotoka International Airport into a modern commercial hub, under the government’s ambitious urban renewal programme, aimed at redeveloping prime areas in major cities across the country.
The new facility which was for the relocation of the Airport Police barracks was a land swap agreement between the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, Lands Commission, Ministry of the Interior, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, and Unique Development Company, a private developer.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo said the facility was “a further testimony of our unwavering commitment to provide decent accommodation and other facilities for our security personnel.”
He said the government will continue to prioritize the provision of decent accommodation and other facilities for security personnel to improve their welfare and enhance their capacity to serve the nation effectively.
“Not only will this facility improve the welfare of our police officers, but it will also enhance their capacity to serve our nation more effectively,” he said.
