The middleman for Ghana’s botched attempt to procure Sputnik V vaccines Sheikh Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum, has agreed to refund a total of US$2.470 million to the government as the “remaining amount for the non-supplied doses” of the vaccines.
Sheikh Al Maktoum was contracted to supply about 300,000 Sputnik V vaccines, costing $5.7 million in an agreement signed with the government through the Ministry of Health for which 50 percent, amounting to $2.85 million was advanced.
However, the agent was able to deliver only 20,000 doses and therefore was asked to refund the balance.
A Parliamentary ad-hoc committee set up to investigate the controversial Sputnik V vaccine deal, ordered the finance minister to retrieve the money.
Sheikh Al Maktoum in a letter dated 5th August 2021 and addressed to the Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, said “we shall initiate the refund process to your bank account.”
This was in response to an August 2, 2021 letter by the Health Minister, asking Sheikh Al Maktoum to refund the balance to Ghana.
Accordingly, the Sheikh said “We, hereby, request to kindly acknowledge and confirm the above-mentioned amounts to be refunded further to which we shall initiate the refund process to your bank account. Please share with us the bank details where the refund needs to be processed”.
