The Dagbon Traditional Kingdom is in a state of mourning following the demise of the King and Overlord of the area, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.
The Custodian Online gathered that the Yaa Naa reportedly passed away after weeks of illness which took him out of the country for medical care.
He has been laid to rest earlier Monday (July 13, 2026) at Katini (The sacred place where Yaa Naas are buried) in line with the customs and traditions of the Dagbon Kingdom.
Following the burial rites, his Regent, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu was installed to oversee the affairs of the Kingdom until the funeral is held and a new Yaa Naa is selected.
Naa Abukari II born on January 1, 1939 became the 41st King and Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom after his succession in 2019 following the resolution of the age-long Abudu and Andani Royal family dispute.
Before his enskinment, Naa Abukari II was the Yoo Naa, Paramount Chief of Savelugu which is one of the three Royal Skins leading to Yendi.
His successful enskinment came 17 years after the untimely death of the late Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani II in March 2002, who happened to be his nephew.
Tenure
The Seven-year tenure of the late King has been described by many as impactful and peaceful.
During the period, the Yaa Naa launched a 10-year Strategic Development Plan to modernize the traditional governance and improve livelihoods.
The initiative is being implemented through the Dagbon Development Fund (DDF) established to raise GH¢150 million to boost agriculture, promote digital inclusion, and rebuild infrastructure.
The target capital will be deployed to achieve the Reconstruction & Modernization of the Gbewaa Palace;
Reconstruction & Modernization of Dagbon Traditional Council among other interventions.
