The NPP Yendi Research and Elections Officer - Abdul Karim Nashiru

The Research and Elections Officer of the New Patriotic Party in the Yendi Constituency, Mr. Abdul Karim Nashiru, who is also a member of the Constituency Elections Committee, has said the committee did a good job for the party and the delegates album in contention reflect the true nature of the constituency.

He said the process was free, fair and transparent in spite of the opposition by some members of the party in the area.

“We did a very good job for the party but as you know, in compiling a register, you cannot satisfy everybody because everybody wants to serve the party and at every point in time some people will be aggrieved and for that matter the committee had to do what we had to do to maintain the serene atmosphere we wanted to prevail in the constituency” he explained.

The Research and Elections Officer however in an exclusive interview with THE CUSTODIAN, said the suspension of last Thursday’s Constituency Executives elections was disappointing, asserting, “a dully constituted elections body came out with an album and a group says it wouldn’t accept it and if at the end of it all, the register is thrown away or in other words it’s not respected by the party then it means there is something wrong with the leadership of the party.”

“So I think that people should reason with us because whatever we did to come out with the album was to reflect the true nature of Yendi” he reiterated.

Internal Rancor

Mr. Abdul Karim Nashiru likened the NPP tradition in the Yendi constituency to family affair and indicated the current impasse within the party can create a serious misfortune for the party.

“We normally disagree to agree and the other side of our divide are our brothers and sisters; so I believe when we are able to cross this hurdle, they will come on board for us to execute the campaign. We all come from one family and we always have trust in our leaders” he emphasized.

Suspension of polls

The NPP General Secretary, Mr. John Boadu, in statement directed that the election which was originally scheduled on Thursday (April 28, 2022) be rescheduled for the time being.

He said the attention of the National Steering Committee was drawn to concerns raised by some members of the party regarding the Yendi internal elections and its related matters.

“This is to allow adequate time for the full implementation of the roadmap towards the conduct of the Constituency Annual Delegates Conference to, among other things, elect Constituency Executives, as agreed by the stakeholders for amicable resolution of the issues at hand in the interest of the party” John Boadu added.

Presidential intervention

Meanwhile, THE CUSTODIAN was reliably informed that the elections were called off following an intervention from the Presidency. As a result, some leading members and constituency executives of the party in Yendi have accused one Alhaji Aminu Amadu, a member of the Council of State from Yendi for allegedly masterminding it.

According to them, the Council of State member is all gymnastics to oust the incumbent MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama, out of the Parliament because of his alleged hatred for the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
