The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, has stated that the government’s efforts to address unemployment are beginning to produce positive results, with both youth and overall unemployment declining since the current administration assumed office in 2025.
He said job creation remains a top priority for the government and requires a coordinated approach involving all ministries and agencies, alongside support from the private sector.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Dr Pelpuo explained that employment generation is not the responsibility of a single ministry but a collective effort across government.
“Government performance has been very good. As you know, job creation is a multi-ministerial, sectorial issue, and what we have seen is that each ministry has a component on how jobs are created, and they are all up and doing and working very hard,” he said.
The Labour Minister noted that various ministries have incorporated job creation initiatives into their programmes, contributing to the government’s broader employment strategy.
He also commended the private sector for complementing government efforts, saying businesses have shown renewed enthusiasm to create employment opportunities.
“The private sector is energised to do more, and we can see them committed to doing the best as they can,” he added.
Dr Pelpuo expressed optimism about the direction of the country’s economy, arguing that recent indicators suggest the government’s policies are having the desired impact on employment and economic growth.
“Generally, I see that things are moving well, and the statistics show that so far we have done so well,” he stated.
According to the Minister, unemployment levels have fallen compared to the period before the current administration took office, reflecting the impact of ongoing government interventions.
“Given the rate of unemployment before we came and the rate of unemployment now, there has been a decrease in both youth unemployment and general unemployment,” the Minister said.
Dr Pelpuo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining policies that promote employment creation, saying it will continue working with both public institutions and the private sector to expand job opportunities across key sectors of the economy.
