A bubbling disagreement between former Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) and presidential hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; and Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC appears to be exploding with the speed of light following a recent clash at the party’s ‘Thank You’ tour of the Bono Region.
The two apparently unrelenting foes are beginning to tear each other apart within the main opposition party with highly baffling revelations coming from Abronye, an individual that Ken has described as a poor man who should not have a say when rich men speak.
The Bono Regional Chairman strongly condemned what he further observed as Ken Agyapong’s repeated portrayal of himself as the main financier of the NPP and a political martyr even though on the contrary, he is the major beneficiary of the party.
Speaking at separate occasions on Wontumi and Movement TV as well as Wontumi Radio, a visibly irritated Abronye descended heavily on Mr Agyapong, accusing him of being “vindictive” and always looking down on people who are deemed poor.
He slammed the former Assin Central MP for habitually calling people poor, daring him to be bold enough to tell Ghanaians what political power, particularly what the successive NPP governments have also done for him.
“In the NPP, he has fed everybody. He has financed the party more than any other,” Bono Regional Chairman sarcastically jabbed Ken.
“The simple question I seek to ask is, each time we hear him say he has financed the NPP, has he (Ken Agyapong) also once gathered members of the NPP and told them what he has also benefited from the party?”, Abronye further queried.
According to him, Ken was paid a whooping amount of GH¢645 million in December 2024 by the Ministry of Finance in just one contract with the Ministry of Energy.
“On 19th December, 2024, Amin Adam (Finance Minister) paid him (Kennedy Agyapong) GH¢645 million from one contract with the Ministry of Energy and yet he turned around to say NPP government did not help businessmen.
“Out of the money, Ken recently donated only GH¢1 million to the NPP, bringing media to show he has donated so much to the party,” Abronye alleged.
Lies against perceived opponents
The Bono Regional Chairman also accused Ken Agyapong of deliberately attacking individuals within the party who he perceived as people against his political ambition.
Abronye recalled how Ken Agyapong ‘lied’ that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia attempted to bribe him with $800 million to pullout of the NPP 2023 presidential primary.
This baseless claim, according to Abronye, was later used against the 2024 NPP presidential candidate and the party a few weeks to the general election, causing irredeemable disaffection for the party.
Response from Ken’s office
Meanwhile, the office of Ken Agyapong has described Abronye’s claims as “unfortunate” and “regrettable.”
Responding a statement signed by Mr Agyapong’s Personal Assistant, Prince Adjei-Guy Gee, the office of the NPP presidential hopeful said Abronye’s utterances were unmeasured and unnecessary.
“Mr Abronye’s unfortunate comments do not reflect the mutual respect expected among individuals who have worked closely over the years,” the statement read.
“Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong has demonstrated discipline, loyalty and restraint in the face of several provocations, and will not be drawn into a war of words,” it stated.
The statement warned that if the accusations are not curtailed, such internal rifts could lead to dire consequences for NPP’s unity and progress.
“If not curtailed, such actions can directly lead to instability within the party, as supporters of Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong may be tempted to respond in kind (Sic),” it warned.
The statement added that while Mr Agyapong had forgiven Abronye, it was important for public discourse, especially among party members, to be guided by decorum and mutual respect.
“Remember that our actual political opponent is not within our party. The NPP must not expend its energy fighting among itself if we genuinely seek to capture power in 2028 and deliver progress and prosperity to the Ghanaian people; then our focus must shift to the NDC, rather than internal skirmishes”
