Chairman of the Northern Regional Security Council, Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, has revealed more than one hundred police personnel have left Tamale due to poor public cooperation in the metropolis.
The Minister indicated there is inadequate numbers of police personnel in the area to combat crime.
“I can tell you that between the last twelve months, police personnel who have left the metropolis are more than 100 who have gone on transfer; so there is a very serious shortfall that we have – they are going on transfer because cooperation is very low, you realize that most of the police were leaving within the communities but people threaten them and they leave on transfers and when they go police personnel don’t want to come here” he emphasized.
Alhaji Shani Shaibu noted the relevant stakeholders in the region must be seen fighting against such issues in the society and offer their maximum support to the security agencies.
The Northern Regional Minister made this disclosure when he led members of the Regional Security Council, REGSEC, to commiserate with families of the two persons who were killed by armed robbers Tuesday night at Kalariga in Tamale.
“When the law has to catch up with people then they either take it political, chieftaincy wise or even take it personal and these are reasons we are witnessing this today. Most of these crimes we’ve happening happen undercover – the people who perpetuate these crimes are the ones that will go on air to intimidate people so that you coil back and they will have the opportunity to do whatever they want to do; what happened yesterday is an eyesaw.”
The Minister indicated steps have been taken to sanitize the situation in the area but bemoan some people wants to demonstrate, against what, he queried, adding it is the same insecurity they are trying to prevent.
“So if you come out, are you coming to help the insecurity or you’re coming to aggravate the situation and these are basic questions we should ask ourselves” he fumed.
Addressing concerns of inadequate police checkpoints and night patrols, Alhaji Shani said there are a number of checkpoints in the metropolis though it is enough due to the inadequate number of police personnel.
