Morocco booked their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The Round of 32 clash produced plenty of excitement, with both sides creating chances in a fiercely contested encounter. The Netherlands took the lead through Cody Gakpo, who finished confidently to give the Dutch the advantage and put them on course for a place in the next round.
Morocco refused to give in and gradually worked their way back into the contest. Their persistence paid off when Issa Diop found the equaliser during normal time, sending Moroccan supporters into celebration and forcing the match into extra time.
Neither side could find the decisive goal during the additional 30 minutes despite several promising attacks, meaning the tie would be settled from the penalty spot.
The shootout proved to be as dramatic as the match itself. In a bizarre sequence, two players from each team failed to hit the target, leaving both sides locked together as the tension continued to build. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou then produced the decisive moment, diving the right way to deny Crysencio Summerville with a superb save.
With the pressure on, Ismael Saibari stepped forward to take Morocco’s decisive penalty. The midfielder kept his composure and calmly converted the winning spot kick to hand the Atlas Lions a 3-2 victory in the shootout and spark wild celebrations among the players and fans.
The victory sends Morocco into the last 16, where they will face Canada, who secured their place in the knockout stage after overcoming South Africa. Morocco will now look to build on another memorable World Cup performance as they continue their quest for a historic run in the tournament, while the Netherlands bow out after suffering heartbreak in one of the competition’s most dramatic knockout matches.
