Norway booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in a fiercely contested encounter at Arlington Stadium on Monday.
The Norwegians made a bright start and were rewarded in the first half when Antonio Nusa opened the scoring with a composed finish, giving his side a deserved lead heading into the break.
The goal capped an impressive spell of attacking football from Norway, who looked dangerous on the counter despite facing a determined Ivorian side.
Ivory Coast returned from halftime with renewed intensity and dominated large periods of the second half. Their persistence finally paid off when substitute Amad Diallo came off the bench to restore parity, calmly finding the back of the net after sustained pressure from the Elephants.
The equaliser injected fresh belief into the African side, who continued to press relentlessly in search of a winner. Ivory Coast forced an astonishing 14 corner kicks and repeatedly tested the Norwegian defence, but wasteful finishing and resolute defending denied them a second goal.
Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Norway’s talisman Erling Haaland produced the decisive moment. In the 86th minute, the prolific striker capitalised on a defensive lapse to fire home the winner, breaking Ivorian hearts and sealing Norway’s progression to the knockout stage.
Despite suffering defeat, Ivory Coast earned praise for their spirited display and attacking intent. However, their inability to convert numerous chances proved costly against a clinical Norwegian side that made the most of its opportunities.
Norway will now carry momentum into the Round of 16, where they face a daunting clash against Brazil.
With Haaland leading the line and the team showing resilience under pressure, the Scandinavians will hope to continue their impressive World Cup campaign against one of the tournament favourites.
