The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has inaugurated a new security group, known as the Lions of NPP, to support the party’s organisational activities and strengthen security during political events and engagements.
The group, which comprises members drawn from various constituencies across the region, was officially launched under the motto, “Be Bold to Do the Right Thing.”
According to the party, the initiative is intended to safeguard party interests, provide security support during internal programmes, and assist at both constituency and regional activities.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Russian Branch Chairman of the NPP and leader of the group, Adure Anthony, said the formation of the Lions of NPP was inspired by a commitment to advancing the party’s objectives rather than pursuing personal ambitions.
He explained that the initiative was conceived in response to security concerns observed during previous elections, noting that political parties often require additional support to complement the work of the country’s security agencies during major political activities.
“During the recent election, I witnessed that our security numbers are very few compared to the number of voters. Sometimes, you need this kind of private security or political parties also helping to deal with security situations during elections,” he said.
Anthony stressed that members of the group would receive the necessary training to ensure they carry out their responsibilities professionally and within acceptable standards.
“The only difference is the training that we will give them. This is just young people trying to help the party in our upcoming elections,” he stated.
He said the initiative is intended to promote order and discipline during party activities while supporting the party’s organisational structures across the region.
Anthony also expressed optimism that similar security groups would be established in other parts of the country to provide support for NPP activities nationwide.
According to him, such groups could help minimise incidents of intimidation, harassment, and misconduct during political programmes, creating a safer environment for party members and supporters.
“Security is part of our everyday lives. Even with our phones, we have security. When you go to sleep, you lock your door; that is security. This is also about protecting the party from miscreants or those who want to misbehave,” he added.
The launch of the Lions of NPP marks the latest organisational initiative by the party in the Upper East Region as it seeks to strengthen its internal structures and prepare for future political activities. Party officials say the group will work within the party’s framework to support programmes and maintain order during political engagements.
