The disgruntled staff members of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) of the Volta River Authority are expected to meet today Monday (March 14, 2022) to reconsider their decision to withdraw field services in the Tamale metropolis.

The union members last week withdrew all field services in the northern regional capital after some residents of Kobilmahagu, a suburb of Tamale, attacked their colleagues during a monitoring exercise.

One of the field staff sustained severe machete wounds on various parts of his body and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

As a result, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) last Friday had a closed door meeting with the senior staff members and management of the utility provider where the regulator appealed to them [union members] to resume work.

But, the beleaguered workers insisted the actions taken was a collective one, and therefore, they needed to get back to their members to hold an emergency meeting before the decision resume work can be taken.

Emmanuel Asare, one of the VRA/NEDCo Union leaders said, “We had a length deliberation with the Executive Secretary of PURC and his management team, as staff group, we are leaders of our members – we’ve told them we needed to revert back to our members and brief them what they [PURC] have discussed with us and the outcome will be communicated to them later. It’s a group and we cannot take decisions without first informing our members”.

He however assured a decision would be made by close of Monday after they [Executives] met with their members.

However, he indicated the service withdrawal still holds unless a resolution taken in today’s meeting says otherwise.
