Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has appealed to Ghanaians to continue supporting the national team despite Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia, insisting the players remain confident and fully focused on achieving a successful campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The loss in Ghana’s final Group L match brought an end to the team’s unbeaten run in the tournament. However, the result did little to dampen the Black Stars’ ambitions, as they had already secured qualification for the Round of 32 thanks to their impressive performances in their opening two matches.
Victories over Panama and a hard-fought draw against England had earned Ghana enough points to progress under FIFA’s expanded World Cup format before facing Croatia in Philadelphia.
Speaking after the match, Ayew acknowledged that the Black Stars did not perform at the level expected of them but remained optimistic that the team would bounce back stronger in the knockout stage.
“We stay positive and on to the next game. Today was a weird game. We were a bit sloppy, and they (Croatia) capitalized on our mistakes.”
The Ghana captain admitted that lapses in concentration proved costly against an experienced Croatian side that punished the Black Stars whenever opportunities arose. Despite Ghana fighting back to equalise in the second half, Croatia regained the lead late in the game to secure all three points.
Ayew, however, refused to dwell on the defeat, describing it as a learning experience that the team can use to improve ahead of the knockout rounds.
According to him, setbacks are part of football, especially at the World Cup, where the margin for error is extremely small. He believes the defeat will help the players identify areas that require improvement as they prepare for tougher opposition.
The skipper also dismissed any suggestions that the result had affected the team’s confidence. He stressed that the mood in the camp remains positive, with every player focused on the bigger objective of progressing as far as possible in the competition.
Ayew noted that the Black Stars have shown throughout the tournament that they possess the quality and determination needed to compete with some of the world’s strongest teams. He urged supporters not to judge the team solely on one disappointing result.
Ghana’s qualification campaign has been built on resilience and consistency. The victory over Panama provided the perfect start before the Black Stars earned a valuable point against England in a closely contested encounter. Those performances ultimately ensured qualification before the final group match.
Although Croatia claimed victory on Saturday, Ghana advanced alongside England to the Round of 32, where they are set to face Colombia in what promises to be another stern test.
Ayew believes the defeat serves as a timely reminder that knockout football demands near-perfect performances, with every mistake capable of changing the outcome of a match.
With the group stage now behind them, the Black Stars will shift their attention to preparing for Colombia. The technical team is expected to review the Croatia defeat carefully, address the defensive mistakes that proved costly, and build on the positives shown during the group phase.
For Ayew and his teammates, the focus remains firmly on the next challenge. The captain is confident the Black Stars can rediscover the form that earned them qualification and continue their pursuit of a memorable run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
