Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed the longstanding family bond that existed between his father, Mumuni Bawumia and Ya Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV, the father of the late Mion lana Mahamadu Abdulai III.    

According to Dr Bawumia, as a result of the family ties, the late Ya Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV was the one who provided the ram for his naming ceremony when he was born and recommended he should be named after the late Dagbon Overlord.  

This history was disclosed at the 3rd day Islamic Adu’a (Ceremony) of the late Mion lana Mahamadu Abdulai III on Sunday (August 21, 2022) at Sambu, the capital of the Mion traditional area.

“It is important for me to state today that the late Mion lana is my brother. His father and my father were very good friends and when I was born; Ya Na Mahamadu Abdulai gave my father the ram for my naming ceremony and said I should be named after him.

“Many people may not know why I bare the name Mahamudu but it was Na Mahamadu who named me after him” he explained.

The Vice President narrated that the two families had close bond and this several decades of friendship continued between himself and the late Paramount Chief and heir apparent to the Dagbon Namship.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo attended Boɣali-luɣabu (3rd Day ceremony) in the company of the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare and a host of other officials of state.

The Mion Lana’s sudden death occurred at the 37 military hospital in Accra last Wednesday, August 17, 2022, after a short illness.

The Paramount Chief has left behind four wives and twelve children.

He was born in 1974 and became Regent of Dagbon at age 14; a day after his father was laid to rest at the Sacred House (Katini).

He was enskinned as Mion Lana on March 3, 2019 by Ya Naa Abukari II.
