The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cautioned Ghanaian electorate to be wary of the empty promises and double standards of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as it embarks once more on its political monkeyshines.

The NDC, the governing party warned, has proven over the years to be gravely inconsistent, especially under the leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the NPP, the largest opposition party should have drawn lessons from its incompetence in managing the economy and safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians but characteristics of the party, it has embarked once more on a journey of empty promises to hoodwink electorates.

Speaking at the party’s weekly news conference in Accra on Monday, Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), Nana Akomea, marveled at a promise by the NDC to pay depositors of the defunct financial institutions.

The governing NPP, he said, has settled over 90 percent of the customers and is in the process of making good the rest.

“Is it not this same NDC that superintended the collapse of the financial sector and denied depositors of DKM and other microfinance institutions any compensation?

“So, I ask, what has changed? This is an obvious demonstration of gross incompetence,” he added.

The former NPP Director of Communications recalled that the NDC in government proclaimed the free Senior High School (SHS) education was not possible in 20 years, an assertion that boldly exemplified the opposition party’s penchant for glorifying mediocrity.

“Today, they have made a sudden U-turn on what they hitherto considered impossible.

“Again, under the erstwhile NDC administration, the Road Traffic Regulation 2012 (L.I 2180) which outlawed the ‘Okada’ business was passed. It is therefore unfathomable that the same party that criminalized ‘Okada’ business is today trumpeting the legalization of same as a headline campaign message,” he stressed.

Banking sector crisis

Mr. Akomea observed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s caution of a banking sector crisis prior to the 2016 general elections affirms the NPP’s ability to effectively identify challenges in the economy.

He lamented that not only did the NDC fail to take action to avert the crisis but emotionally assaulted the victims of the banking crises.

“Interestingly, the same party is today promising to ‘reimburse them’ if elected. God save Ghanaians from such deliberate deceit”, Nana Akomea prayed.

Double standards

According to him, the NDC’s recent promise to pay customers of DKM when the party earlier described the victims as reckless investors is a manifestation of double standards.

“Evidently, Mr. Mahama and his NDC when in government find it expedient to cancel what is good for Ghanaians – such as the teachers’ and nurses’ trainee allowances only to promise their restoration when in opposition,” he added.

Such U-turns, Nana Akomea warned, are not accidental but clear manifestations of Mr. Mahama’s indecisiveness, lack of credibility, penchant for vain promises intended to score cheap political points, and the general insensitivity to the plight of Ghanaians, particularly victims of the financial sector crisis which thrived under his watch.

He stated that it had to take the promise-keeper, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to clean the banking sector mess and inject the requisite financial resources that saved existing financial institutions from total collapse, prevent loss of jobs and pay depositors.

He assured that by October 2020 all affected persons would have received their investments, adding that, “This can only happen under an Akufo-Addo-led government, in spite of the ravaging effects of COVID-19.”

Inclusive development

Nana Akomea stressed that Ghanaians have seen the light of progress and inclusive development under President Akufo-Addo contrary to the deprivation, stagnation, and selectivity that characterized the Mahama-led government.

He urged Ghanaians to therefore keep progress on course by voting for the NPP come December 7, 2020, because the country cannot afford to go back to the dark days under Mr. Mahama and his NDC.
