The Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Daniel Botwe has given assurance to traders at the Kejetia Market that each of them will be allocated with a meter soon.
The minister gave this assurance while briefing the press after a close-door meeting with leadership of the various trader groups at the Kumasi City Market as part of his three-day tour in the Ashanti region.
Some of the traders have shut down their stores over what they term exorbitant electricity bills being shared among them to pay in the region of GHC5 million.
Mr. Botwe said he will arrange a meeting between the energy ministry and the traders to find a lasting solution to the meter issue.
“We will have a meeting with the management of the city corporation, then the regional management of ECG here, we will have a meeting with the board, KMA and the leadership of the traders and I believe we are prepared to move forward,” he said.
The president of the Kejetia Petty Traders Association, Nana Prempeh, told Asaase News they are looking forward to resolving the issue.
“We’ve been able to express our grievances, tabled it before the minister, and per the interactions that we had today, we realised he has given us a roadmap,” Mr. Prempeh said.
