The Savelugu Constituency Elections Committee will vet prospective aspirants today Sunday (April 23, 2023) in line with the elections timetable.

Information exclusively obtained by THE CUSTODIAN reveals forty-three (43) prospective candidates filed at the close of nomination to contest the constituency executive polls scheduled on Saturday, 29th April, 2023.

Per the elections timetable, the committee after today’s vetting process will open the window of opportunity to hear all appeals of disgruntled parties in the elections if any on Monday April 24, 2023. The committee will print out electoral materials on April 25, for the conduct of the constituency elections.

The NPP had earlier elected polling station executives across one hundred and twenty-three centers and the 25 electoral area coordinators in the constituency.

The party delegates are expected to elect ten constituency executives from the Chairman to the Nasara Coordinator. The incumbent Chairman is facing competition from four others.

Other keenly contested positions include the Youth Organizer position, 8, Secretary position, 6, Organizer 5, Treasurer 4, First Vice Chair position 3, Second Vice Chair 3, Assistant Secretary 3, Women Organizer 3 and Nasara Coordinator 3.

However, the remaining seven executives which include some deputy executive positions, Communication Director and the Director of Research and Elections will be appointed after the polls.

Meanwhile, Savelugu is the only constituency out of the eighteen (18) constituencies of the Northern Region the governing New Patriotic Party is yet to elect its executives in the lead up the 2024 general.  

The party had to suspend the polls due to the 2020 parliamentary election petition filed at the Tamale High Court by its Parliamentary candidate, Hon Mohamed Abdul Samed Gunu, who was then the incumbent MP.
