Mr. Eric Yeboah Apeadu, elected PC for Akuapem South constituency

The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem South, Mr. O. B. Amoah, has witnessed his hardworking special aide emerging victorious in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary for the constituency.

Mr. Eric Yeboah Apeadu secured 267 votes out of a total of 542 valid votes cast, defeating the Akuapem South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Frank Aidoo who placed a distant third with 69 votes in the Saturday’s polls.

Two other contestants, Eric Samuel Annor Mensah had 54 votes while Kwame Ofori-Gyau polled 152 votes to place second in the race.

The Akuapem South MCE had caused the postponement of the election, which was originally scheduled to be held on January 27, 2024.

The MCE petitioned the leadership of the governing party to allow him to participate in the primary after the withdrawal from the contest, by Mr. O. B. Amoah.

Mr. Frank Aidoo was initially disqualified from the contest but with the connivance of forces within the NPP, created the impression that he was very popular in the constituency and therefore could win the primary and retain the seat for the party.

Consequently, after several discussions at the National Council, the second highest decision-making body of the party, the MCE was included on the ballot.

However, the results of the polls clearly indicated that Mr. Frank Aidoo was indeed unpopular and probably wasted everybody’s time and resources.

About 562 delegates were supposed to vote at the Presby Women’s College of Education in Aburi to choose a parliamentary candidate for the NPP in the South Constituency of the Eastern Region but 642 turned out to vote.

The Eastern Regional Secretary of the party Tony Osei Adjei who supervised the elections outlined plans to bring unity among the rank and file of the party.

Speaking to journalists, Mr Osei Adjei refuted claims the delay in conducting the primaries will affect the fortunes of the party in December.

In his acceptance speech, Eric Yeboah Apeadu expressed his gratitude to the delegates for the honour done him and called on them to work hard for the party to retain the seat as well as win the presidential election for the governing party to “break the 8.”

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem South Mr. O. B. Amoah in an interview also called for unity to ensure the governing NPP wins both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
