The Ghana Education Service (GES) has distributed over 6.6 million sanitary pads to schoolgirls nationwide to address menstrual hygiene challenges.

“As part of efforts to promote the welfare and dignity of girls, the Management of GES announces the distribution of 6,607,095 sanitary pads to schoolgirls across all 16 regions of the country.

“This initiative is aimed at addressing menstrual hygiene challenges and ensuring that no girl misses school during her menstrual period,” a statement issued and signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, has announced.

The statement comes as Ghana joins the World to mark International Day of the Girl Child.

On October 11, each year, GES joins the global community to commemorate the day.

This year’s theme is: “The Girl I am. The change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crises.”

The Day also serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to support the growth, education, and empowerment of every girl child in Ghana and beyond.

According to the statement, “this intervention is in fulfilment of the Government of Ghana’s promise to provide free sanitary pads to all schoolgirls, from basic to second cycle, a monthly basis throughout their life in school.”

“It reflects the government’s commitment to improving menstrual hygiene, promoting gender equality in education, and safeguarding the health and confidence of adolescent girls.”

The statement assured all schoolgirls of its continuous support and reiterated its dedication to building an education system that is inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of every learner.

GES encouraged girls to stay focused on their studies and take full advantage of the opportunities provided to them.

GES extended its heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Education for the tireless efforts in operationalising the important life-changing initiative for schoolgirls across the country.
