The Government of Ghana has paid GH¢10.816 billion to bondholders under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), fully settling its latest coupon obligation in cash and on schedule.
The Ministry of Finance, in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, said the latest payment brings the total amount paid to DDEP bondholders since 2025 to GH¢41.36 billion.
“This is the third DDEP coupon payment made fully in cash. It was paid in full and on schedule,” the Ministry stated.
The payment fulfils an assurance given by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review to Parliament on July 23. He had assured Parliament that the government would settle the GH¢10.8 billion obligation by August 18.
“The seventh DDEP coupon payment of 10.8 billion cedis falls due on the 18th of August 2026. Let me use this opportunity to assure this House that it will be paid on time and in full,” Dr. Forson told Parliament.
The DDEP, introduced in December 2022, forms part of Ghana’s broader debt restructuring programme aimed at restoring debt sustainability. The programme involved exchanging existing domestic bonds for new instruments with revised terms, affecting banks, pension funds, insurance companies, individual investors and other creditors.
The latest disbursement represents the seventh coupon payment under the restructured domestic debt programme. In February 2026, the government paid GH¢10.1 billion as its sixth DDEP coupon, which the Finance Ministry said was also settled on time and in full.
According to the Ministry, the timely payment reflects the government’s commitment to meeting its debt obligations and is expected to boost investor confidence.
“The timely payment demonstrates Government’s fiscal discipline and firm commitment to meeting all its debt obligations. It will strengthen investor confidence, reduce sovereign default risk and reinforce Ghana’s financial credibility,” the statement said.
The government further assured bondholders and investors that future DDEP obligations would be honoured as scheduled.
“Government assures bondholders, investors and the public that all future DDEP obligations will also be paid in full and on schedule,” the Ministry stated.
The latest payment comes as the government continues efforts to rebuild Ghana’s credibility in both domestic and international debt markets.
In July, the government also fully settled a US$700 million Eurobond obligation ahead of schedule, bringing total payments to Eurobond holders since January 2025 to US$2.1 billion.
