Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) polling station executives and electoral area coordinators among hundreds of party supporters marched to the Savelugu constituency office on Thursday (July 20, 2023) to pick the nominations form for Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz to contest the upcoming parliamentary primaries.
According to them, the Presidential Staffer when elected can defeat the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament, Alhaji Iddrisu Jacob, in the 2024 general elections and recapture the seat for the NPP.
The group after meeting the requirement and successfully going through the process marched to the family house of the aspirant where the document was presented to the family elders.
Addressing the media, some polling station women organizers said their decision to support Hajia Fatahiya was based on the fact that she has demonstrated commitment to alleviating their predicaments in the constituency.
Madam Katumi Sumani who identified herself as an assistant organizer said, “We out to fight poverty and the suffering of women, women take care of their households and looks after children to go to school”.
“The coming of Hajia Fatahiya is a great sign of relief for us and we believe she will bring the needed development to the constituency. We pray for a peaceful process so that she can win the primaries and eventually win the seat in 2024 so that as a party we can all rejoice” she said.
Abdul Rahim Naatogma, a polling station executive at Pigu told THE CUSTODIAN Hajia Fatahiya will emerge victorious in the primaries.
He also described the aspirant as a woman of substance whose political career he added has been very instrumental for people in the Savelugu constituency.
“…She is been with us since 2015 and supported our former Member of Parliament, Abdul Samed Gunu in the 2016 elections. She came back again in the 2020 elections and supported the constituency with cash and items and as we speak today there are enormous projects she doing in the constituency.
“She is currently drilling over 20 mechanized boreholes across the constituency, so I think if she is elected as the NPP candidate for Savelugu, she will be able to bring development to the people” he maintained.
Meanwhile, some members of the NPP have appealed to the hierarchy of the party to reconsider the decision not to allow proxy voting in the primaries.
In their view, such a regulation is a recipe for confusion in the party, stressing it will disenfranchise voters unnecessarily.
