Huawei Technologies Company Limited has launched its maiden digital technology programme Leaderships, Employability, Advancement, Possibility (LEAP) in Ghana to foster a strong digital leadership and a skilled Information Communication Technology (ICT) workforce.

The programme is aimed at building a digital talent pool and promote digital literacy among citizens.

Founded in 1987, Huawei Technologies is a leading global provider of ICT infrastructure and smart devices with integrated solutions.

Presenting the LEAP, Vice President of Huawei Southern Africa Region Mr. Yang Chen described Ghana as a country with huge economic potential and immense room for development.

 Mr. Chen noted that Ghana has strong public institutions and infrastructure as the government is focused on improving the business environment in order to strengthen private sector participation.

“It is also worth mentioning that the ICT industry of the country plays a very critical role in the economic growth.

“As a global ICT company operating in Ghana, we are happy to travel together with our partners down the road to recovery and towards an inclusive and sustainable and a resilient development”, he added.

Mr. Chen on behalf of his company expressed their profound gratitude to the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Academia, captains of industries for their tremendous support to make this launch possible and also wish the students and other job seekers, the very best luck in their quest to get employment in the ICT industry.

Speaking at the ceremony, Madam Hannah Ashiokai Akrong, Human Resource Director of Vodafone Ghana, said her outfit is very passionate about youth employment and future skills.

According to her, Vodafone Ghana has made a commitment to use their resources, expertise and technology to contribute significantly to developing the country’s human capital.

“We are living in an era that classroom education is no longer enough, life-long learning, reskilling and upskilling have become critical to ensuring that both individuals and businesses have access to the talent they need for the jobs of the future” she stressed.

In an interview with the media after the ceremonial launch of LEAP in Ghana, the Minister for Communications and Digitisation stated that her ministry is encouraging women to also embrace technology.

“The future of technology is females and would want to break those barriers and let them know that, it can’t just be male preserved”, she added.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful challenged the employers present at the Job fair to make sure each female applicant leaves the fair with a firm job offer.

This, the minister noted, will motivate other females to also follow in their footsteps, knowing that at the end of the day, they can acquire the right and get good jobs which will enable them have a secured future whiles the nation will also continue to get the cutting-edge skills that the young people are acquiring.

“We can’t continue to as a country, rely on foreign consultants to manage the digital infrastructure, applications and this we are putting systems in place. So as part of our Ghana Beyond Aid Agenda, we need to grow our own capacity to manage our infrastructure and that is why we put such an emphasis on digital skills”, she stressed.
