Mr Haruna Mohammed - Deputy National General Secretary of the NPP

The Northern Regional Director of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and a Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, popularly known as Prof Haruna, has said the people of Tamale will always remember the NPP for its legacy projects in the region.

He mentioned the construction of the Naa Gbewa interchange; the upgrading of the Tamale airport into an international status and the Aliu Mahama Stadium under the erstwhile John Kufuor NPP government as legacy projects the party has done in the northern region.

The monumental infrastructure development, he asserted, will manifest in the 2024 general elections because the party has well invested the resources of the people.

He said unlike the opposition National Democratic Congress, the New Patriotic Party believes in the “Can do” spirit.

“We have always believe in the can do spirit but our brothers in the NDC always believe that it cannot happen. This is not the first time, when we were to do the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium our people said it was not possible, that we are going to cause deforestation but low and behold we went ahead to do the construction and today its serving a lot of purpose – contributing to our music industry, contributing to sports and recreational activities and national activities as well” he argued.

Tamale inner roads

Mr Haruna recounted, “The same way when we were to open the roads within Aboabo and some other areas, people said that this was not possible, we had to fight with people and pulled some structures down. Today, you see that we have about 40kilometres asphaltic roads that we have done and new roads we have created hasn’t even been taken care off – so we always do things that nobody else does because we believe we have to invest in the people and investing in people means we have to spend the resources of the people on them”.

The YEA Director noted the Akufo-Addo led NPP administration is also doing other road infrastructure projects, bridges, water facilities across the country with the $2 billion dollar Sinohydro Master Project Support Agreement (MPSA) without adding a cedi to the country’s debt stock.

“Again, in the phase two of the Tamale airport project, if you go there and see the terminal being built, the Hajj village, water reservoirs and other physical infrastructure and we came again with a renewed focus of not adding burden to our debt stock by coming out with the Sinohydro project” he pointed out.

Other road projects

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo during the commissioning of the Naa Gbewa interchange in Tamale last month announced work will commence from the second quarter of the year on the dualization of the Tamale – Savelugu road, reconstruction of Savelugu – Walewale road.

He added the rehabilitation of 106km Yend to Tamale is being done by Messrs China Water and Electric and the construction of the 62km Yendi to Zabzugu road by China Jianxhi Limited.

The President said the Ministry of Roads and Highways has programmed to complete some 1,500 kilometres of asphalt overlay works between 2021 and 2024.
