The Savelugu constituency will not be part of the New Patriotic Party delegates conference slated later this month to elect new Regional Executives for the party.
The Savelugu constituency reorganization, unlike the other 17 constituencies, has been put on hold and as a result, the national council of the party will soon come out with guidelines and measures for the in-house political administration in the constituency.
Consequent to that, the constituency will not be able to present eligible voters to participate in the May 28 elections as scheduled in Tamale.
The Northern Regional Director of Communication, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed Sheriff said all other 17 constituencies in the region have successfully elected the required 10 constituency officers stipulated in the party’s constitution.
In addition, he stated the NPP constitution also requires the appointment of 7 other executives to make an executive committee of 17 persons in each of the constituencies, emphasizing the state we’re in now is the consultation period in appointing the remaining seven officers in each of the 17 constituencies.
He revealed that the New Patriotic Party constitution allows for 14 days for the appointment process to be completed from day of the election of the new crop of constituency executives.
“What we hope now is that, this consultation processes will not go beyond the 14-day moratorium that the constitution provides, so that, after the 14-days, we can have the complete 17 executives for each of the 17 constituencies in the northern region” he stressed.
Tenure of Savelugu Executives
Mr. Mohammed Sheriff pointed out that the party would’ve to institute an interim management team for the Savelugu constituency since the four year mandate of the current executives has ended.
He explained once there are new elections happening in other constituencies, what it means is that, the executives in the Savelugu constituency would’ve their mandate expired.
“The party has two options and I believe that the national steering committee at this point in time would be evaluating the options. One is that, the party can appoint an interim management committee to run the affairs of Savelugu constituency because it is not possible that the party will run a constituency within any part of Ghana without executives and there’s nowhere Savelugu remain without an existing constituency executives.”
Alternatively, he asserted the national steering committee or national council can take a decision that pending the resolution of all outstanding issues pertaining to the reorganization, the current executives can have a limited extension of their mandate for three months, six months or one year – so that in this space, the NPP organize activities leading to having new leadership for the constituency.
