The nomination of Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman as running mate to the 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not only strategic and laudable but a decision that will bring an end to the long silenced voice of women in all spheres of life; this is according to the NDC Women Wing in the northern region.
The NDC Women Wing in a statement copied to THE CUSTODIAN declared their unwavering support to the former Minister of Education on her selection to partner John Dramani Mahama in the December Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The Northern Regional Women’s Organizer of the party, Hajia Nafisah Alhassan said the decision is timely because many well meaning citizens of the country are yearning for quality representation of women in decision making.
In her view, this brings decency and integrity to the office of the Vice President and allegedly said this has been eroding in recent years.
“The quality in Prof Naana which earned her called to this great nod demonstrates the trust and confidence that can be bestowed on women at all levels. The academic prowess of Professor Jane Naana, a distinguished scholar with imbued integrity and competence, earned her the position of Ghana’s first female Vice Chancellor in Public University” Hajia Nafisah argues further.
The NDC running mate according to the Women Organizer has a distinguished Public Service life and good international standing, adding this will undoubtedly make her a quality Vice President of Ghana if NDC is voted in power in 2021.
Former President John Mahama announced the nomination of Jane Naana at the National Executive Committee meeting earlier this week which was unanimously accepted by the leadership of the NDC. The former Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Coast would become the first female Vice President of the Republic if the NDC is able to win the upcoming Presidential elections.
Meanwhile, Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University Of Ghana, Dr. Seidu Alidu says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stands a chance of garnering more votes based on the choice of their running mate.
He argues that, the gender card will play a role during this year’s elections, stressing that, the competence of Madam Jane Naana as an academic and scandal-free administrator gave her an advantage over other candidates.
